How is TwoTree Brand Bow Hair prepared?
99% of the World's Bow Hair is prepared for the market in China. The tails for TwoTree Manchurian™ Bow Hair come from horses that lived in Mongolia, Siberia, Inner Mongolia and Hei Long Jiang Province (China). The hair remains on the bone and the tails are sorted into bales according to color, length and slaughter date. The bales are loaded onto pallets which go onto freight trains bound for Hebei province.
We go to a huge warehouse near the rail yards where animal hair from all over the world arrives in huge bales on pallets. This place is enormous, many football fields in width and length. It is dark, dirty and it stinks of mothballs, feces, urine and blood. Although most of the animal hair has been washed before it arrives here, some of it is not - and the overall stench is overwhelming to the untrained nose. Buyers from workshops all over come here to bid on lots of animal hair. There's boar hair for bristles, cow tails for paint brushes, goat and yak hair, and every kind of animal that produces hair can be found here. We make bids on bales and lots according to the following criteria: slaughter date (We buy only the freshest tails), length (We buy the longest available), color (we buy the lightest color - as white as possible).
Horse tail hair is a mess when it arrives at the dressing facility. There is still a lot of work that has to be done to ready it for the market.
The workers then “draw” the hair. They take a bundle of cleaned hair and throw it over metal spikes called "hackles". The process essentially combs out the hair making it easier to handle and to sort. One would think this method would damage the hair, but it surprisingly does not. Horse hair is very sturdy, and it takes a lot more than combing to damage than one would imagine! After the hair has been straightened, it is wrapped in vertical bales of cardboard paper and tied tightly. The hair is then pulled out of the bundle in strands of 4-6 at a time. Many bad hairs are discarded at this stage of the process. Workers will draw approximately 1 kilo of hair in loose bundles at a time, and will be wrapped in paper bundles during the final stage. After the hair is drawn, it is stacked. This is the stage that determines the "grade" of hair we sell.
TwoTree Brand Bow Hair is graded not by quality of the hair, as all of their horse hair is top quality, but by how well it is sorted and packaged for the industry. The reason for this has to do with the person who puts the hank of hair in a bow, and what the purpose of that bow is.
1. Manchurian™ Quality Select™ is double drawn and the only sorting is what happens from the hackle stage to the bundling and drawing stage. Minimally sorted - suitable for student & fiberglass bows.
2. Manchurian™ Professional Select™ is double drawn and goes through a visual sorting process by someone who has been sorting bow hair for over 30 years. It is then tied off in the traditional way and wrapped in paper for shipping to the US. Double drawn, visually sorted - suitable for all types of good wood bows.
3. Manchurian Premium Select™ is double drawn, visually sorted and goes through a second visual sorting process by someone who has been sorting for over 40 years. It is then hand tied loosely and then wrapped in a clean opaque sturdy paper, thus protecting it and keeping it safe from damaging UV rays. Double drawn, triple sorted, wrapped in paper - suitable for the best bows: silver & gold mounted pernambuco, hand-made and the finest carbon graphite bows.
Manchurian LIVE™
Manchurian LIVE™ bow hair is only available in one length because it has been removed from the animal while it still lives. No larger size bundles are available at this time.
This hair is fantastic! Gorgeous to look at, supple, easy to work with, and very very fresh, it has been double drawn, triple sorted, wrapped in paper - suitable for the best bows: gold mounted pernambuco, hand-made and the finest carbon graphite bows.
